If your learner is a cat definitely get these. When cats get interested in an item they will bite it, scratch it and roll in it so these help the textiles stay together and not be ripped apart. I am happy I thought ahead and got these with my first order.
We had issues with the foam edge pieces -- both dogs and cats would pull them off and we have a couple of chewers that loved foam. Yikes! I thought we would have to reinvent our board using other materials. The first time I saw these I knew they were the solution to my problem! These hard plastic frame pieces snap together tightly, leaving no gaps for chewers to get hold of foam tiles. They also hold the board together as a unit. I highly recommend this product!
I am a dog trainer and added a new puppy to my own family last year to train as my search and rescue partner. She is a high drive dog and almost immediately started barking whenever she wanted something. I decided to try buttons as a way to give her an alternate method of communicating. I introduced them when she was about four months old. She figured out how to press the “treat” button the first day. A year later, she is up to 16 buttons, which she uses every day. She has recently started commenting on situations and asking questions instead of just asking for things, which is extremely interesting. I just got the frame pack to finish off her board, and I am pleased with it. It is not perfect (and it’s expensive for just some plastic pieces), but it is good and gives a nice finish to the board. From the pictures, it looked to me like the pieces were foam with plastic edging, but they are in fact all plastic. They snap together to create a solid edge. What I don’t love about them is that the board slides around more easily on my hard surface flooring now. The plastic seems to be slipperier than the foam of the tiles. I am planning to either add some tape under the board or cut a piece of non slip carpet backing to help hold the board in place.
Frame pieces work well keeping the hextiles clean and in place. I have purchased 2 sets already. The quality and fit is very good. That said, they seem very expensive for what they are.
I have two dogs, and when they get rowdy, the hex tiles and foam edge pieces often move or the puzzle comes apart. The plastic edges pieces solve it. I would love to have some rubber on the bottom to further prevent slippage and protect my floors.

I was using the tiles without the frames pieces for months. These make it look so nice and holds them out from the wall for easy reach for her.
